No budget festival feels the squeeze No budget festival feels the squeeze
September 25th, 2010

A quick chat with Martijn Sanders of WEI makes a few revelations about this year’s 3rd ever Armut Macht Geil – No Budget Festival. Firstly, it had to be after the summer on a weekend and not coincide with a PSV (football) match. This year’s edition had to be only one day instead of two. And the future of WEI is unknown after 7 November – they have to leave their Mathildelaan premises and have no forwarding address. What does this mean for a cultural institution in Eindhoven that provides a great night out and some dancing to a fab Motown mix, care of Jozua? Check out the fab vid by Flitsboem!

We haven’t really done a long photo essay of impressions on The Dossier yet. So, now’s the time, as we’ve been pumped with inspiration by the hundred + international level artists that descended on Eindhoven these last 3 days. And you’re not too late! There’s another day to go, from noon until midnight Sunday 12 September 2010.

2: Dialogue with Lucinda, by nb / Nicole Beutler
The Dossier: So, what’s going through your mind while you’re dancing this piece?
Christiane: You really have to concentrate. If you lapse, it’s really dangerous. I did it a couple of times tonight – did you see?
The Dossier: No, honestly I was in a trance.
Javier: You have to be careful because you get really dizzy in the first piece.

The second edition of Flux-S is opening as I type, an event I unfortunately cannot attend due to a very much anticipated international visit from a dear friend.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t go to each of the next days of this 4-day international arts festival at Strijp-S in Eindhoven. The theme is Flux/S – Drafts Establishing Future. To illustrate a future cultural heart in Eindhoven, a large number of artists will inspire people with visual arts, music, performance, dance, film, video, poetry and literature.

You say hello, and I say … hello You say hello, and I say … hello
September 4th, 2010

Tomorrow, you can toddle along to the Hallo Cultuur! event in Eindhoven, where all the cultural institutions will be opening their very wide arms to accept a very broad audience, with a range of activities and performances to show what they do and let us all have a taste of let’s call it “organised culture”. By coming along, you’ll be actively living your cultural life. Whether you subscribe to season tickets to the Parktheatre remains to be seen, but it doesn’t matter. Live. And say hello (or ‘hallo’) to lots of other people experimenting with a different facet of their personal approach to culture.

Zimmer Frei or Fiesta del Sol … which country is Eindhoven in? Zimmer Frei or Fiesta del Sol … which country is Eindhoven in?

Why is it interesting that a significant Dutch village in the south of Holland should have two very different festivals with foreign names take place over the one weekend? What do these events say about the self-image of this post-industrial town? Why does this big village have to borrow holiday references to give itself credibility? Where is Eindhoven really; who is it? Where does the real character of Eindhoven “happen” and who makes it happen?

Ah, this was the last on my festival tour of Eindhoven this weekend just past. I didn’t spend long there. It was a street party and it has a cheerful vibe. Like, “Summer is finally here in Holland!”  There were nice looking people there (that is, people I thought I might like to meet and […]

Chamber music in the green 2010 Chamber music in the green 2010
June 28th, 2010

Like many of the events that Eindhoven puts on, the Kamermuziek in het Groen was an all family affair (although in the beginning I was a bit worried to notice I was one of very few people under 40). We were blessed by glorious weather, and I actually have no idea how many people came, but I wouldn’t be surprised whether 5,000 or more people made it to the Stadswandelpark for a rare but overdue injection of chamber music.

Extinguishing the flames of inspiration Extinguishing the flames of inspiration
June 26th, 2010

We were a motley crew: students, local hippies, scholars and even Wubbo Ockels was there – the first Dutchman to go into outer space 25 years ago. Almost everyone had something to say. But was the debate inspiring? Can we really make a difference or will we just go along with the greenwash? Debate Competition, Saturday 26 June, Inspiration Days 2010
