Face to face with Joan Baez Face to face with Joan Baez

I was enjoying my sunny Saturday like everyone else when an email popped into my mailbox from a guy from Portland called Ian who needed a haircut. Seems kind of random, right? But when it turns out that he’s the lighting guy for folk legend Joan Baez and would be in town for a few days and needed a few tips, I didn’t hesitate to put together a bespoke itinerary for Ian and his crewmates. In my reply email I was also cheeky enough to venture for a ticket to tonight’s concert, and maybe even an interview with the great lady. Let’s just say Ian was pleased with his new hairdo.

Like many of the events that Eindhoven puts on, the Kamermuziek in het Groen was an all family affair (although in the beginning I was a bit worried to notice I was one of very few people under 40). We were blessed by glorious weather, and I actually have no idea how many people came, but I wouldn’t be surprised whether 5,000 or more people made it to the Stadswandelpark for a rare but overdue injection of chamber music.

The biggest surprise for me of the evening: Matt the Electrician. It’s not the Paul Simonesque voice, the quirky album cover art with the chicken or the trademark beard + hat combo. It’s Matt’s lyrics. During “Happy Ending” I found myself in tears.
