I just read on Twitter and in the local paper, Eindhovens Dagblad, in the culture section, that the much loved Plaza Futura film/theatre/restaurant on the Leenderweg is not doing well enough to afford its rent.

What to do? The local council member for Culture, Mary-Anne Schreurs expects that Plaza Futura will move to the terrain for living/work/culture that is under development here in Eindhoven – Strijp-S. “It’s clear that the institution won’t be able to turn around by itself and we, as the local council, cannot contribute any structural subsidy. So we have to find another solution. This would be by making effective use of the space at Plaza Futura. This could work by having other institutions use the accommodation.” Who does she have in mind? Filmplatform Broet, theatre company Afslag Eindhoven and Hetpaarddatvliegt (literally, the horse that flies, a kids’ theatre troupe) or even the Eindhovense School or het Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid, (the Institute of Image and Sound) .

One of the most comforting aspects of my move to Eindhoven was discovering Plaza Futura 3 1/2 years ago. Akin to much loved Melbourne cinema houses (which also seem to be dying out) such as Lygon Street’s Nova (before it became huge!) and with progamming similar to the Astor Theatre on Chapel St and the Carlton Moviehouse (before it turned into STA travel in 1999) on Faraday street, Plaza Futura is a beloved venue with a sphere that makes you feel like you’re pulsing in sync with the sometimes elusive Eindhoven cultural hearbeat. I would hate to see it go!

Stay tuned for updates!
