STRP Festival impressions STRP Festival impressions
November 28th, 2010

Well, if you want to contemplate life, the pace of modern life, your youthful imagination, play, connect with ideas and other people, and take time to just slow down and smell the flowers, then STRP Festival was the best place to do it this weekend. As well as looking forward to another conference and more great international acts, like those put on over the last ten days, next year you must reserve one or two days out of next year’s festival to check out the EXPO good and proper. I know I will. Some great footage was captured, but I couldn’t do it justice (maybe later, though). STRP is an experience and one that must be done with all 5 senses. See you next year.

Esphere – what is the world coming to? Esphere – what is the world coming to?
November 26th, 2010

I’m sitting in the Klokgebouw at the STRPFestival Esphere Conference and am a bit overwhelmed about the world as we imagine it, at least, how the folks on the stage are envisioning it. Geert Lovink is on the podium now, saying that many people have different ideas about what the Internet of Things is as a concept, and that we will also shape it for the future. “Our influence, no matter small, even as artists in this obscure building in Eindhoven, should not be downplayed.” Even my being here today is part of the process, I guess. In my small way, while watching where the world may be going in art/technology I’m a co-creator of it. (Even though I’ve been sitting on my hands and being an observer/twitterer/blogger).

From the mouths of babes From the mouths of babes
November 22nd, 2010

Sadly, despite all the screaming we did on Saturday, no change in the government’s iron decision to cut funds for culture. Maybe they’d change their mind if they saw this speech which nearly made me cry on Saturday. Because Sep, only 9 years old, delivering his first public speech, told us why culture and expression is an absolutely essential factor of our human condition. Watch and weep (quietly while no one is watching).

Big ideas during a big night in Big ideas during a big night in
November 7th, 2010

Tomorrow, on Monday night and we won’t have a television hooked up at home. Truth be told, I don’t spend that much time in front of the box, but if I did, I’ve nothing to fear, for Baltan Laboratories is having an Exciting Evening at Home!

Three speakers, a beamer, two record players, and party food will help us feel a bit more at home – as do current developments in media technology when we’re not at home. Tomorrow night, Baltan Laboratories is opening up its hearth to you and Oliver Schürer, Tatjana Djordjevic and Marc Maurer. They will tell you what their take is on the link between media and architecture.
I really hope to make it. If I can’t, why don’t you pop over and make yourself at home?

Emptying a home to fill it with talent Emptying a home to fill it with talent
October 31st, 2010

What I like about the idea of the House of Talent is that many of the designs to be seen during a week like this can be somewhat obtuse, hardly practical – bordering on art. There’s nothing wrong with that. On the other hand, sometimes you feel like you’re walking through a trade show or some sort of “home and interiors fair” which is a little bit uninspiring in terms of “design” in an important sense (mind you, beautiful stuff). What this House of Talent is, is three-fold. It creates a podium for a range of designers and it puts an interesting range of products in context. Then there’s the third bit. You need the talent of curators Nanning and Mischa to put the right pieces together, from the right curtain color to the complementary artwork (not part of the exhibition, but fitting nonetheless).

Collecting as a strategy to depict a social situation Collecting as a strategy to depict a social situation
October 25th, 2010

The Van Abbemuseum director, Charles Esche’s definition of “collection as a strategy to create an image of a social situation” is the perfect explanation of what it is The Dossier has been attempting to do since launching officially in June this year.

STRICTLY CLASSIFIED
October 22nd, 2010

Today I had the immense privilege to sit with a motley band of design, literature, and fashion gurus for 8 hours asserting why they found certain ideas beautiful/functional/inventive/poetic – or not. While there was no blood shed, there were votes re-cast and minds changed … and then some! Come to the glass paned Greenhouse at the Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven and see the entries for yourself starting tomorrow. Entry is €3 and doors open at 11am. You can also vote for the People’s Choice (public award).

In the eye – Berlin In the eye – Berlin
August 19th, 2010

Eindhoven needs a photography gallery. One cannot help but be inspired by the industry and entrepreneurship of Berliners. Eindhoven (inadvertently or intentionally, who knows?) models itself on patterns to be found everywhere in Berlin – we too have the abandoned buildings (see the brilliant Berlin blog Adaptive Reuse) and designer hairstyles. Of course Eindhoven is small fry compared to the intense cold and dark heritage of Berlin, but yeah, the concept of hergebruik (adaptative reuse) is no stranger to the Dutch artists … and my hairdresser’s staff (Faces) frequently pop eastwards to Berlin for hair cut and colour refresher courses. That’s a start.

Summer smorgasbord Summer smorgasbord
June 21st, 2010

Today’s the Summer solstice. We’ve just realised there’s simply too much to do, see, hear or follow as Summer starts in Eindhoven.
More details to come, but here’s what’s on offer this weekend alone: Keuken Confessies’ sun deck dinner party, Architecture Days project on redefining adaptive reuse in Eindhoven, Inspiration Days, Autonomy Project kick-off – Summer School hosted by the Van Abbemuseum, Via Ventosa street party, Venus Project Tour visit to Eindhoven. Take your pick!
